For the remote access to E-Journals, E-Books and databases of the Vienna University Library is no VPN connection available anymore. Please log in via the authentication service u:access. This service works in your browser without additional installation. Further information can be found on the u:access website.

If you have any questions, please contact uaccess.ub@univie.ac.at

For security reasons, some services can only be used with a University of Vienna IP address. The ZID therefore makes Virtual Private Network (VPN) access available – i.e. an encrypted virtual network connection via the Internet.

Via the VPN connection you will receive an IP address from the pool of the University of Vienna and thus – if you are using a different Internet provider – have the option of accessing restricted services of the University (such as libraries or databases).

You have to install the F5 Big-IP Edge Client. After installation and connection you will be given an IP address from the address range of the University of Vienna and can thus use all services via this address. Due to the VPN tunnel, the user’s PC is – from a network perspective – considered part of the university network. A valid u:account is required to create the connection.

  • You can install a VPN client for Windows and Mac OS directly from the VPN page under the item BIG-IP Edge Client.
  • The instructions to install the client for Linux (Ubuntu) can be found on the VPN instructions page (German only).
  • The F5 clients for mobile operating systems (IOS, Android) can be downloaded in their respective App Stores. You can find instructions on the VPN instructions page (German only).

After the installation of the VPN software you only need to enter the following details to set it up:

Server (Host): univpn.univie.ac.at
User name: Your u:account UserID
Password: Your u:account password
