Personal website

Every member of the University can use 1 GB of free data storage space (web space) for a personal website on the web server. You can publish websites that consist of HTML , PHP or CGI files.

Creating a personal website

The web server of the University of Vienna offers the following tools and features to create a personal website:

  • HTMLMarkup language for creating websites
  • PHP , CGIScript languages for creating dynamic websites
  • Database
  • Directory protection (in German) and extended directory protection (in German)Configuration file .htaccess, e.g. to protect directories and files from unauthorised access
  • Web statistics: Information about web traffic on your website
  • SSL certificate: All personal websites have a valid certificate and are accessible via https://.


PHP

PHP is activated if a file ends on .php. You can see the PHP version currently installed on the server under Webserver-Paketversionen (web server package versions).


Common Gateway Interface (CGI)

CGI is activated if a file ends on .cgi. CGI scripts run with the privileges of the file owner. CPU time is limited to 60 seconds.


Notes on data storage space

The homepage has to be entitled index.html, index.htm or index.php and has to be located in the /html/ website folder.

Deleting the website folder /html/ can affect the functionality of the website. Please contact the ZID Helpdesk if there is no shortcut to the website folder /html/ or if the shortcut does not work as desired.

Launching a personal website

To launch the website you created on the internet via the web server of the University of Vienna, you have to transfer the files of your website to the web space. You have the following options to transfer the files:


Embed the web space as a network drive

  • Server name (host): \\fs.univie.ac.at\u:account UserID
  • User details: u\u:account UserID and u:account password

Use the User guides in Online storage space (in German).

If you are not in the range of the University of Vienna's data network, you need a VPN connection.

Drop the files for your personal website in the html folder to publish them on the internet.


Accessing the web space via locally installed software

  • Übertragungsprotokoll: SSH, SCP, SFTP
  • Server name (host): login.univie.ac.at
  • User details: u:account UserID and u:account password

In the computer rooms of the ZID

IF you work in the public computer rooms of the ZID, please drop your files of your personal website in the folder Z:\html to publish them on the internet.

As soon as you have transferred the data, your website goes online immediately and is accessible under the following address:

You can add your website to your entry in the staff directory on u:find. Please use the function Edit my entry on u:space.

User guidelines

You have to comply with the u:account regulations for use (PDF) as well as the WWW guidelines (PDF, in German) when you launch a website on the University of Vienna’s servers. Please read these documents carefully and act accordingly.


Disclosure obligation pursuant to sec. 25 of the Mediengesetz (media act, imprint)

Please note that the disclosure obligation pursuant to sec. 25 of the Media Act applies to websites.

In accordance with this provision, all website operators, i.e. also u:account users who maintain their personal websites, are obligated to constantly provide the following information on their websites where they are easily and directly retrievable:

  • Name of operator (in case of companies, the company name); and
  • address (in case of companies, registered office and object of the company)

The ZID recommends to embed the link to the Privacy Policy for websites of the University of Vienna in your website.
