Opening u:cloud in the browser and getting to know its functions
Opening u:cloud in the browser
- Open the u:cloud website at ucloud.univie.ac.at.
- You will be automatically redirected to the Weblogin of the University of Vienna. Log in with the UserID of your u:account (example: doejamie99) and the corresponding password.
- Once you have successfully logged in, you will be taken to the u:cloud home page.
The user interface is divided into a menu bar (top), a main window (right) and a menu (in the left column).
Getting to know the menu bar
Various apps (such as Files and Contacts) are displayed as icons on the left of the menu bar. The Files app is displayed by default.
- Move your mouse cursor over the icons to display the app names.
- Click on one of the icons to open the corresponding app.
On the right-hand side of the menu bar, you will find the search function (magnifying glass icon), notifications (bell icon), contact search (business card icon) and your user account (profile picture). Click on your profile picture
- to access the Settings
- to select a dark- or light-coloured design for the user interface under Appearance and accessibility.
Getting to know apps
- Main window: Displays a list of your files and folders.
- Menu: Select from various filter options to display your files (such as Recent, Favorites, or Shares). The All files option is selected by default.

- Main window: Displays all changes in your own u:cloud and the changes in all shared folders.
- Menu: Select from various filter options to display the activities. The All activities option is selected by default.
- Main window: Shows a list of your contacts stored online.
- Menu:
- Add new contacts, import contacts or create contact groups.
- Open the Contacts settings at the bottom left.
- Main window: Create events and share them with other people.
- Menu:
- Set up new calendars, edit and share them, or change the calendar view.
- Open the Calendar settings at the bottom left. Scroll down in this area to configure additional settings. Among other things, you will find the option to copy the CalDAV address (for use in Thunderbird, for example).
- Main window: Displays a list of your saved bookmarks. Add new bookmarks or use the search function.
- Menu:
- Display duplicates, broken links or bookmarks shared with you, for example.
- Open the Bookmarks Settings at the bottom left. Scroll down in this area to configure additional settings.
Getting to know the user interface
The main window (right) lists your files, their respective file sizes, and the time of the last modification. It also shows whether the file has been shared with anyone.
Above the list is the file path, starting with the All files folder.
In the menu (left column), you can choose from various filter options to display your files (such as Recent, Favorites, or Shares). The All files option is selected by default.
At the bottom left, you can access the Deleted files. For information on how to restore files, see Restoring deleted files.
Downloading and sharing files
- Download: Activate the checkbox next to a file or folder and click the Download button to save it locally on your device. Alternatively, click on a file (only .pdf or .docx) to download it.
- Share: Click on the person icon or on Shared next to a file or folder to share it with other users and assign permissions (such as View only, Can edit).

Moving files
You have two options for moving files and folders within u:cloud.
- Click on the three horizontal dots ⋯ to the right of the desired file and then on Move or copy. Select the desired folder and click on Move to (folder name).
- Drag and drop files or folders into a new folder. If you want to move a file out of a folder, move the file to the desired layer in the file path.
Restoring deleted files
If deleted files are still in the recycle bin, you can restore them from there.
- Click on Deleted files at the bottom left of the menu.
- Click on Restore to the right of the desired file.
Folders and files are kept in the recycle bin for at least 30 days and at most 180 days before they are permanently deleted.
