Assigning file names and selecting processing profiles

This user guide explains how to assign file names for the upload to the u:stream server and how to select a processing profile.

Restrictions for file names

The naming of the uploaded files is basically up to you. However, special characters and umlauts are not permitted.

Following characters are allowed:

  • abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
  • ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
  • 0123456789
  • . - _+

Processing profiles

The u:stream server can be informed by means of a postfix in the file name (not to be confused with the file name extension) to process the uploaded video according to a predefined profile.

  • In particular, video resolution and the availability of alternative video sizes can be influenced in this way. There are also profiles that are tailored to AV material from certain types of cameras.
  • For audio recordings only, information on processing profiles is not necessary, in this case a standard audio procedure will be performed; two audio streams are calculated, each using different audio codecs (MPEG-2 Layer III aka mp3 & AAC). Simply store audio files in the desired location on the Share streamin.

For all profiles, including the standard procedures, a page with an integrated player is generated for each uploaded audio and video recording.

Sizing

Size Description
$XRES, $YRES Original width or height of uploaded video
%XRES, %YRES Scaled width or height (Maintaining the aspect ratio)

Standard profile

If no profile is named, video files will be calculated according to a standard processing profile.

Two videos will be made availabe on the u:stream server, one in high, one in low qualitiy: The width of the videos is – independent of the resolution of the uploaded original video – 640 or 320 pixels. The height results from the aspect ratio of the video.

Resolution Video bit rate Audio bit rate Container
640 x %YRES 500 128 kbps mp4
320 x %YRES/2 150 64 kbps mp4

_dvd

This profile is suitable for video files that are otherwise intended for local playback on the PC or television, and for video material ripped from DVDs.

Two variants are calculated: one in the original size and one with half the height and width of the page.

Resolution Video bit rate Audio bit rate Container
$XRES x $YRES 900 96 kbps mp4
$XRES/2 x $YRES/2 450 64 kbps mp4

_dv

Older camcorder models sometimes do not record full images, but use the interlacing method in which fields are recorded. For transmission to the web, these must be converted back into full images using deinterlacing.

Three different video sizes and a pure audio version are calculated.

Resolution Video bit rate Audio bit rate Container
%XRES x $576 900 96kbps mp4
640 x %YRES 400 96 kbps mp4
320 x %YRES/2 150 64 kbps mp4
Audio - 64 kbps mp3

_fc

This profile is for cameras recording in full screen („progressive“).

Three different video sizes and a pure audio version are calculated.

Resolution Video bit rate Audio bit rate Container
%XRES x $576 900 96 kbps mp4
640 x %YRES 400 96 kbps mp4
320 x %YRES/2 150 64 kbps mp4
Audio - 64 kbps mp3

_parts

With longer recordings, some camera models begin to save their video material in several consecutive files.

In order to have these processed on the u:stream server as a coherent video, create a directory that you name according to the conventions for assigning file names, and add the ending _parts to the end.
