Installing desktop app

This user guide will help you install or uninstall a desktop app on your Windows or macOS device.

Windows


Installing via Microsoft Store

The Microsoft Store is a secure source for apps for Windows, as Microsoft checks them.

  1. Open the Start menu by clicking on the Windows icon in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  2. Enter Microsoft Store in the search bar.
  3. Click the corresponding search result.
  4. Search for the desired app in the Microsoft Store.
  5. Click Download.
  6. Once the app has been installed, you can start it via the Open button.

You can find the app later at any time via the Start menu in the list of apps.


Installing via installation file


1. Downloading installation file

  1. For security reasons, always visit the official website of the software provider to download the app.
  2. Look for the download page or the corresponding link.
  3. Download the installation file (usually an EXE or MSI file, example: SampleApp-Installer.exe).


2. Running the installation

  1. Open Explorer and navigate to the folder where the installation file was downloaded (usually Downloads).
  2. Open the installation file by double-clicking it.
  3. A pop-up window may appear. You will be asked whether this app is allowed to make changes to your device. Confirm with Yes.
  4. The installation wizard will open. Follow the instructions in the wizard (accept the licence agreements, select the installation location, etc.).


3. Starting the desktop app

  1. Open the Start menu by clicking on the Windows icon in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  2. Search for the newly installed app in the list of apps or enter the app name in the search bar.
  3. Click the app to start it.


Uninstalling desktop app

  1. Open the Start menu by clicking on the Windows icon in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  2. Enter Settings in the search bar.
  3. Click the corresponding search result.
  4. Select Apps on the left and then Installed apps.
  5. Find the app in the list. Click the 3 horizontal dots ⋯ and select Uninstall.
  6. Confirm with Uninstall.

macOS


Installing via the App Store

The App Store is a secure source for apps for macOS, as Apple checks

  1. Press Command and the space bar simultaneously to open Spotlight search.
  2. Enter App Store in the search bar and press Enter.
  3. Search for the desired app in the App Store.
  4. Click Get and then Install.
  5. Sign in with your Apple account if prompted.
  6. Once the program has been installed, you can launch the app via the Open button.


Installing via installation file


1. Downloading installation file

  1. For security reasons, always visit the official website of the software provider to download the app.
  2. Look for the download page or the corresponding link.
  3. Download the installation file (usually a DMG or PKG file, e.g. SampleApp-Installer.dmg).


2. Running the installation

  1. Open the Finder and navigate to the folder where the installation file was downloaded (usually Downloads).
  2. Open the installation file by double-clicking it.
  3. Depending on the app, one of the following options will appear:

    • The app will appear as an icon in a new window. Drag the app icon to the Applications folder.
    • An installation wizard will open. Follow the instructions in the wizard (accept the licence agreements, select the installation location, etc.).


3. Launching the desktop app

  1. Press Command and the Space key simultaneously to open Spotlight search.
  2. Enter the name of the app in the search bar.
  3. Click the corresponding search result.


Uninstalling the desktop app

  1. Open the Applications folder in Finder.
  2. Find the app you want to uninstall.
  3. Right-click on the app and select Move to Trash.
