Online storage space

University members can store their data on central online file servers and access them from anywhere. The system creates a backup every night. The ZID Helpdesk can recover deleted or changed files.

Students

Students can use 2 GB of personal storage space. You can check the size of your storage space and space currently used on the online file servers under My u:account.

Employees

Employees can use 10 GB of personal storage space. If you require more storage space, please contact the ZID Helpdesk.

You can check the size of your storage space and space currently used on the online file servers under My u:account.

Accessing the storage space

Use the user guides.

You require an active student or employee u:account, or an active extended u:account for external persons to log in.

Embedding the storage space as a network drive

  • Server name (host): \\fs.univie.ac.at\u:account UserID
  • User details: u\u:account UserID and u:account password

If you are not in the range of the University of Vienna's data network, you require a VPN connection to access the storage space.

Accessing the storage space using locally installed software

  • Transfer log: SSH, SCP, SFTP
  • Server name (host): login.univie.ac.at
  • User details: u:account UserID and u:account password

You can find your data in the subdirectory fileserver.

In the computer rooms of the ZID

When you are working in the public computer rooms of the ZID, you can find your files on the Z: disk. Please save data only on this Z: disk when you are working in the computer rooms of the ZID.

Granting access permissions

Changing the access permissions directly (for example, via chmod) is not possible. All files automatically have the correct permissions: Other accounts on the server cannot access the files. The Unix list of file options displays attributes incorrectly, as the files are embedded via Samba.
