VPN – virtual private network
VPN allows users to connect to the uni data network via the internet from outside (e.g. at home or on the move).
VPN is a requirement for using certain IT services from outside, such as:
If a service needs VPN, it is indicated in the respective service description on the ZID website.
1. Setting up multi-factor authentication (MFA) for VPN

Logging into the VPN is secured with multi-factor authentication (MFA). You must therefore set up a second factor in order to use the VPN.
Possible second factors are:
- authentication app (e.g. FreeOTP, Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator)
- security key (YubiKey)
You can only set up one second factor, either an app or a YubiKey.

2. Configuring VPN software

Special software is required to use VPN:
- Windows, macOS, Linux: Log into vpn.univie.ac.at and download the software under BIG-IP Edge Client.
- Android, iOS, iPadOS: Download the F5 Access software from the respective app store.
You may need the following information to configure the software:
Server: vpn.univie.ac.at
You can only establish one connection per u:account at a time.

Once you have set up VPN, you can use the service at any time to connect to the university data network from outside.
To do this, open the VPN software (BIG-IP Edge Client or F5 Access) and log in with your u:account access data and the one-time password.

You cannot change the second factor yourself.
If you want to change the second factor, for example, because you have lost your smartphone or want to use a different authentication app, use the Servicedesk form Zweiten Faktor ändern (changing second factor, in German, processed on weekdays).
