Computer rooms
All members of the University of Vienna with a valid u:account can use computer workstations in the computer rooms of the ZID free of charge, for study-related or academic work.
In addition, there are further computer rooms at the university departments, faculties and libraries that the members of the relevant discipline may use.

Update: Changes to the computer rooms
Many students now work flexibly using their own laptops or tablets – in libraries, student spaces or other modern learning environments. As a result, the way the computer rooms are used has changed significantly in recent years: fixed computer workplaces are now rarely used.
Because of the new usage patterns and and the steadily declining usage, the ZID is adapting the availability of computer rooms to better meet current needs.
From 19 July 2026, computer rooms at the following locations will therefore no longer be available:- Neues Institutsgebäude (NIG, Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Vienna): Computer Rooms 1 and 3
Please also note the latest information on the u:print service page. - Campus of the University of Vienna (Spitalgasse 2, Courtyard 7.1, 1090 Vienna): Computer Rooms 2 and 3
The computer rooms will be closed from 2 July 2026 due to an event. - Universitätszentrum Althangrund (UZA II, Geozentrum, Josef-Holaubek-Platz 2, Level 1, Wing A, 1090 Vienna): Computer Room 1
- Universitätszentrum Althangrund (UZA II, Pharmazentrum, Josef-Holaubek-Platz 2, Level 5, Wing D, 1090 Vienna): Computer Room 1
- Oskar-Morgenstern-Platz university building (Oskar-Morgenstern-Platz 1, 1090 Vienna): Computer Room 4
- University of Vienna Biology Building (UBB, Djerassiplatz 1, 1030 Vienna): Computer Rooms 1 and 2
The affected computer rooms will be marked in good time both on site and in the list of locations.
What alternatives are available?
Several alternatives remain available to you: please use the computer rooms at institutes or in special libraries. For those wishing to work on their own devices, the University of Vienna offers modern Student Spaces at a total of 10 locations.
Equipment will continue to be used for teaching
The PCs, monitors and cabling from the computer rooms will be sustainably repurposed by the Faculty of Computer Science, where they will be used in future teaching laboratories.
The so-called class rooms – rooms for computer-based courses – are not affected by these changes.Further information can be found in the IT News article.

Use on site
You can use the PCs at the computer rooms with your u:account. After the log-in you can use the personal storage space service to access your personal data on the Z: share.
You can print, scan and copy using u:print at many computer rooms.
Please show consideration for other users (fair use):
- Keep the noise down
- Vacate PCs as quickly as possible during busy times
- Leave the workplace clean
Optimising your user profile
Your personal programme settings – the so-called user profile – are stored centrally on a server. They are loaded to your computer when you log-in, and are copied back to the server when you log-out.
Storage space for user profiles is limited. You can check how much storage space you are currently using under My u:account.
- Keep your user profile as small as possible. This shortens the time it takes to log in or log out.
- If an error message is displayed while log-out informing you that your server-stored user profile was not fully synchronised, the available storage space may be full. This means that your personal profile cannot be stored on the server.
In this case, please follow the user guide Optimising your user profile.
