Using u:cloud with locally installed software

This user guide helps you to use u:cloud with a locally installed software on Windows, macOS and Linux. 

Opening the u:cloud software

Via the search function of the operating system

  1. Use the search function of your operating system by clicking on the magnifying glass icon in the taskbar (Windows) or in the menu bar (macOS).
  2. Enter ucloud in the search field.
  3. Click on the u:cloud entry to open the software. 

Via the u:cloud icon

Click on the u:cloud icon in the taskbar (Windows, Linux) or in the menu bar (macOS). The icon may vary according to the u:cloud software status: 

  • Cloud
  • Blue circle with 2 arrows
  • Grey circle with pause icon
  • Green circle with tick

Managing settings

  1. Click on the u:cloud icon in the taskbar (Windows, Linux) or the menu bar (macOS).
  2. The main menu opens. On the top left click on your name. 

Click on Settings. The settings open in a new window. 

Note

The option Enable virtual file support is not yet supported by the ZID. If you activate this option and data is lost, the ZID will not be able to provide support. 

Preventing automatic start

The u:cloud software starts automatically after booting. If you do not want this, click on General in the top right corner. 

Deactivate the checkbox Launch on System Startup. Alternatively, you can remove the u:cloud software from the system startup.

Selecting folder for synchronisation

By default, your entire u:cloud is synchronised. If you do not want this: 

  1. In the Settings, you will find an overview of your u:cloud folder structure. Leave the checkbox activated for all folders that you want to synchronise.
  2. Click on Apply. 

Confirm the changes. 

Status display, activities

The status of the u:cloud software is displayed via the taskbar (Windows, Linux) or the menu bar (macOS):

Cloud: The u:cloud software is not set up or has no internet connection. 

Blue circle with 2 arrows: The u:cloud software is currently synchronising files or folders. 

Grey circle with pause icon: The u:cloud synchronisation has been paused and must be continued manually. 

Green circle with tick: Synchronisation is complete. All local files and folders are up to date. 

By clicking on the u:cloud icon the main menu opens. There you can see the activities that the software has generated. 

Accessing apps

  1. Click on the u:cloud icon in the taskbar (Windows, Linux) or in the menu bar (macOS).
  2. Click on the 4 icons (calendar, contacts, envelope, 3 dots) in the top right corner.
  3. Click on the respective entry (e.g. files, contacts, calendar) to access the app. It will open in a browser window. 

Sharing files and folders

  1. Click on the u:cloud icon in the taskbar (Windows, Linux) or the menu bar (macOS).
  2. Click on the 3 horizontal dots ⋯ to the right of a file or folder.
  3. Open the Sharing tab.
  4. Select a sharing option:
    • Click on the plus icon + next to Link share and then on the copy icon to create and copy a share link.
    • Click on the copy icon next to Internal link to copy the corresponding link.
    • Use the search field to share the document or folder with specific users or groups.
  5. Share the link (e.g. via e-mail).
