Installing u:print on Linux
This user guide will help you install u:print on Linux.
You can use the CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) printing system for this. This system is the standard for most Linux distributions.
Requirements
- Your device is connected to the Uni data network or access is via VPN.
- You are using CUPS version 2.2 or higher
- You have the smbclient and system-config-printer packages pre-installed. You can install both packages at the same time with the command
sudo apt install smbclient system-config-printer.
Note
If you have changed your u:account password, proceed as follows:
- Open a terminal by entering Terminal in the search field on your desktop.
- Open the printer settings by entering the command
sudo system-config-printerin the terminal. - Click Change in the menu Device URI.
- Enter your new u:account password.
Configuring a new printer
- Open a terminal – Enter the command
system-config-printerin the terminal – Add – Network printer – Windows printer via SAMBA – Enter the following in the smb:// field:uprint.univie.ac.at/FollowMe(for students) oruprint.univie.ac.at/Staff(for employees) – Select the option Set authentication details now – Password: u:account password, Username: u\u:account UserID – Next - Provide PPD file – Download PPD file – Click on File selection field – Downloads – Select downloaded PPD file – Forward – Forward – Enter uprint in the Printer name and Description fields – Apply – (Optional: Print test page – Transfer – OK)
- Click on the Network Printer entry in the menu on the left.
- Click on the entry Windows Printer via SAMBA.
- Enter the following in the smb:// field on the right:
- Students:
uprint.univie.ac.at/FollowMe - Employees:
uprint.univie.ac.at/Staff
- Students:
- Select the option Set authentication details now and enter the following data:
- Password: Your u:account password
- Username: u\u:account UserID (example: u\doejamie99)
- Click on the Forward button.
- You will be asked to choose a driver. Select the option Provide PPD file.
- Download the following PPD file from the Canon website.
- Click on the file selection field.
- The file is now selected. Click on the Forward button.
- Click on the Forward button in the Installable Options window.
- In the Describe Printer window, enter uprint in both the Printer Name and Description fields.
- Click Apply.
- If you want to print a test page, click Print test page in the Would you like to print a test page? window.
- Confirm with Transfer and then with OK.
- The test page should now appear in the list of print jobs on the u:print device.
- Do not print the test page if you want to avoid credit being deducted from your u:card for the test page.
Changing printer options
If you want to change the printer options, you may need to start the printer settings as a superuser.
- To do this, open a terminal by entering Terminal in the search field on your desktop.
- Enter the following command in the terminal:
sudo system-config-printer
Otherwise, the changed settings will not be applied.
